Crooked River, Spring Version, 2009-2010

oil on canvas 20 x 24 inches

In the fall of 2009 I started a series of second versions of some of my earlier paintings from college.  I wanted to take some of my favorite beginner compositions and try them again applying everything I had learned since college.   I liked this area of the Crooked River because of the view of the valley, and I did two paintings from this location in college.  I had problems drawing the shape of the hills and river in the original version.  While the distortion in the shapes would appear to betray a lack of drawing skill, the distortions were fully intentional.  I was overreaching in an attempt to make the painting more interesting and the attempt failed completely.  With the second version I wanted to draw the hills and river more accurately.
