I had a friend who was an avid hunter, and he would provide me with birds to paint from his hunting trips. I had never been very interested in still life painting, but I gave still life painting a try because it is a convenient subject to have in the studio. I made quite a few drawings and paintings of house plants and vases of flowers in high school and college. When I got tired of flowers I tried experimenting with paintings of birds.
