Fairy Tale Owl, 2004
construction: wood, paper, fabric and plastic owl 7 x 3.75 x 2 inches
This sculpture was inspired by the Grimm’s Fairy Tale The Owl. In the story a farmer finds an owl perched in the rafters of his barn and believes it to be a monster. The other villagers, after investigating the barn, agree that it is a monster, and as none of them is brave enough to fight the monster, they set fire to the barn and burn it to the ground. I think the story appealed to me because the owl was misunderstood because the villagers couldn’t see past their own expectations. At the time I was thinking a lot about multiple readings based on different perspectives and expectations.
