July Fourth, 2005
oil on canvas 34 x 28 inches
This painting started with a print I made in college. Unlike most of my paintings where I work from observation or from photographs, this painting was entirely painted from imagination. The painting and the print were partly inspired by a couple I knew in college, and partly be The Weakerthans song Our Retired Explorer (Dines with Michel Foucault in Paris, 1961). When I was younger I often struggled to feel inspired and often that meant feeling uninspired in a relationship. While I was working on this painting I was thinking about what it's like to feel stuck or frozen in a relationship that's blocking one's creativity or inspiration.
