Barnes Butte with Snow, 2009

oil on canvas 18 x 30 inches

I first noticed Barnes Butte on Christmas Eve while driving around with my family looking for houses with Christmas lights.  When we drove by the hill I had to get out of the car and venture out into the snow to see the hill more clearly.  I painted the picture from memory when I got home that night.  The problem I had with the first version was that it was too dark.  I relied heavily on mars black paint with the first version, so when it came to painting a second version I used no black paint and mixed all the neutrals with colored pigments.
